Life on Coronado Island, Day 36: Beaches Under Quarantine

It’s been a while! I’m using this quarantine period to dive back into journaling and blogging in a more personal way, hoping to keep both you and me entertained. It might seem like you’ve missed a lot of updates, but I’ll do my best to fill you in as we go along. In the meantime, stay safe and make sure to wash your hands.

Living by the beach has really helped lately. I’ve been pretty short-tempered and have zero tolerance for nonsense these days, but I would’ve gone even crazier if we lived in a high-rise apartment. We live on Coronado Island, which depends on the city of Coronado. The beaches here closed later than those in San Diego. There’s a special dog beach our pets love, and the main beach near the iconic Hotel Del Coronado is perfect for people-watching and evening walks. My husband and I often head there in the afternoons to catch the sunset, as it’s just a couple of miles away.

Even when the city closed the beaches, the sidewalk still offered beautiful ocean views. Coronado Island is a long strip of land with the ocean on one side and San Diego Bay on the other. That’s where we live. Our campground has its own private beach on the Bay and a little marina where some people live on boats full time. It seems like we have an unusually high number of dogs here, shared between the marina folks and the RV community. There’s also a base housing area with a few dozen homes and a closed school that shares the beach with us.

Despite this, you wouldn’t find more than a few people on the beach on a random Sunday. It’s not great for swimming since the Bay water isn’t very inviting, but the sand is nice, and the dogs absolutely love it. We can’t use the ocean beach right in front of the campground because it’s reserved for Navy SEAL training.

Even though this whole virus situation has been driving me a bit nuts, having the beach nearby has been a lifesaver for my sanity. It’s also helping me get some exercise since I’ve been eating way too much.
